It is always a delight to have easy snacks all-around your house. Street foods in India offer a range of such options. Easy to prepare and easy to cook, a number of them require minimal ingredients. Murmura chivda is one such addictive snack that needs minimal oil and offers a blast of flavours.

What else you need? A perfect blend of spices, puffed rice, nuts and cereals, murmura mix will never fail to entice you. Other than the basic ingredients, some people add crunchy veggies like chopped onion and cucumber and some lemon juice or tamarind paste to give it a twist. And, it becomes West Bengal’s famous bhelpuri, which is quite popular across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka as well. Serves 2
  • puffed rice200 grams
  • oil3 tablespoon
  • asafoetida powder1 Pinch
  • mustard seeds1 teaspoon
  • turmeric powder1/2 teaspoon
  • green chilli3 Numbers
  • curry leaves15 Numbers
  • chana dal1/4 cup
  • cashews1/3 cup
  • salt As required
  • peanuts1/4 cup


Step 1

Heat oil in a kadhai and add asafoetida, mustard seeds and turmeric powder. When mustard seeds start to crackle, add green chillies and curry leaves and sauté till the curry leaves become crisp.

Add roasted chana dal and sauté for about a minute. Add cashews and roast until they become light brown.

Next, add murmura and mix well. Add salt and fried peanuts. Mix well until it is crispy. Let it cool at room temperature and store in an airtight tin. Your healthy murmura chivda is ready for munching.
