Tomatoes, olives, anchovies, jalapenos and even pineapple as pizza toppings are conceivable. What about ice? An Instagram chef has ruffled some feathers on the internet by topping the pizza with ice cubes.
The Internet is a great place to score great recipes and some amazing food hacks. A casual scroll through Instagram and TikTok will introduce you to skilled cooks and their tried-and-tested kitchen hacks. That being said, sometimes, things can get really bizarre on the internet. A case in point is a recipe for "Ice Pizza" that has left some bewildered and many Italians crying.
A video shared by a chef who goes by the username doeshebakedough is going viral on the internet, leaving many people scratching their heads. The account has over 78 thousand followers and features many dough-based recipes. The video itself has garnered close to 8 million views and a has rather buzzing comment section.
The chef prepares a "sourdough ice pizza" where instead of using the usual toppings like tomatoes, olives and pepperoni, he uses three cubes of ice. He says that the ice will gradually melt, leaving behind a starchy sauce. While that's hardly appetising, the chef insists that the recipe is a "bloody glorious idea." Here's how he prepares it.
The recipe seems fairly simple and can be made at home using a regular oven. Whether one wants to try it is a different question. Those brave enough can follow the recipe. Here are the ingredients:
Flour 3 cups
Warm water 1/4 cup
Sugar 2 teaspoons
Salt to taste
Olive oil 3 tablespoons
Ice cubes 3
Parmesan or pecorino cheese
How to make ice pizza:
1. Mix the yeast with water and sugar. Let it rest for 5 mins.
2. Now put flour and salt on your work surface. Make a well in the centre. Add the yeast mixture and water.
3. Knead to a soft dough for 10 mins Next, add some oil. Knead for 5 mins Rest the dough covered in a bowl for 1 hour.
4. Take the dough and knead again.
5. Roll out the dough or fashion it into a pizza shape.
6. Top with ice cubes and bake in the oven at 180°C for 15-18 mins.
7. Once done, top with any cheese of choice.
Understandably, the viewers are confused. The comments are mostly negative with some people convinced that the chef is trolling them. " This HAS to be a joke or I’m deleting my social media," said one. Another one said succinctly: "Wasted... Destroyed... Destruction."
"That special sauce...it's water," read one comment.
In the sea of negative comments, some stood out for being positive. A person commented that the recipe was "the most innovative idea 💡 by far." Another wrote: "Bloody good."
Some users pointed out that the chef has merely made Cacio e Pepe pizza popularised by Chef Stefano Callegari. The recipe uses ice cubes as toppings to create a starchy sauce in the centre of the pizza. The cooked pizza is then topped with pecorino cheese and pepper to taste.
Irrespective of how you feel about the pizza, the video has sparked a big debate on the internet. If you feel particularly brave today, try out the recipe and let us know how it tastes in the comment section.
