Cold winter evenings with friends are made exponentially better if you have a glass of mulled wine in hand. "Mulling" is a process in which spices and alcohol are warmed long enough for the flavours of the spices to seep into the drink. It's a Christmas favourite. Home chef Shruti Murdeshwar shares her recipe for the drink flavoured with orange, cinnamon, anise and cloves. Here's how you can make mulled wine.
red wine
187 mililitre
orange
2 Numbers
cloves
3 pieces
cinnamon stick
1 Numbers
star anise
1 Numbers
honey
1 teaspoon
green cardamom
1 Numbers
Add wine, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, star anise, cardamom and Cointreau (optional) to a large saucepan.
Let the mulled wine simmer on medium-high heat until it just barely reaches a boil. Avoid letting it bubble. Let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours
Use a strainer to decant the hot wine to another utensil. At this stage, remove and discard the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Taste the mulled wine. Add the honey.
