Jamrul is shaped like a bell with a pit or core inside, which is discarded while eating. The flesh is usually white or pinkish.

In Hindi wax apple is called jamrul. In Malayalam it's called chambakka. Other names of the fruit include wax apple, Java apple, Semarang rose apple and wax jambu.

These fruits are seldom marketed and are generally picked fresh and eaten. To counter the tartness, it's eaten with some sugar on the side. Rose apples are also candied or turned into jams.
