One of the closest relatives of the humble onion, chives are perennial plants found across Europe, Asia and North America. They are a common herb and can be found in grocery stores or in home gardens. They are chopped and used as ingredients in omelets, potatoes, soups and even fish. Chives can even be used in salads.

While chives have an onion-like taste, their flavor profile is less pronounced than regular red or yellow onions. What’s more, while onions leave a pungent odor in one's mouth, chives are more mellow and do not cause bad breath. They have a crisp pop of flavor and stark green color which adds another dimension (both in terms of taste and visuals) to any dish.
