Key health benefits of coconut oil
Good cholesterol: Experts opine that medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a component in coconut oil, may help boost levels of good cholesterol. Studies have also shown that extra virgin coconut oil’s impact on cholesterol may be similar to that of olive oil.
Fat burning: Obesity is one of the biggest diseases plaguing the world today. The MCTs in coconut oil can increase the number of calories the body burns compared with longer-chain fatty acids. However, one has to keep in mind that coconut oil is actually extremely high in calories and can easily lead to weight gain if consumed in large quantities.
Antimicrobial effects: Coconut oil contains 50 per cent lauric acid, which forms a substance called monolaurin when digested by the body.
Reduce hunger: MCTs present in coconut oil may also help reduce hunger. This is because the way the body metabolises fats as ketone can reduce a person's appetite.
Reduce seizures: Since MCTs in coconut oil get transported into the liver and get turned into ketones, experts opine that it can be used in a ketogenic diet, which is used in treating drug-resistant epilepsy in children.
