India, long celebrated for its rich and diverse food culture, has been given a rating of 4.4. While it didn’t break into the top five, and has been given the 12th spot, its position remains significant, especially given the enduring global popularity of .
TasteAtlas’s list of India’s most popular dishes includes roti, naan, chutney, biryani, dal, butter chicken, tandoori chicken and more. The inclusion of chutney, however, has raised some eyebrows among Indian food lovers, given that it is typically considered a condiment rather than a standalone dish.
As for where to eat, the guide namechecks a few iconic spots: Dum Pukht at ITC Maurya, Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, Tunday Kababi, Leopold Cafe, and Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, to name a few.
It is the positioning of other countries, however, that has generated the most chatter. The United States has been ranked at number 13, just after India, placing it ahead of culinary heavyweights such as Peru (14), Lebanon (26), Thailand (28) and Iran (41).
Unsurprisingly, the rankings have triggered strong reactions on social media.
One user asked, “What is US cuisine?” Another replied, “McDonald's.”
Someone else chimed in with, “Iran 41? Really? Then 13? With mac and cheese?”
So how did TasteAtlas reach these rankings? According to the site, it was based on “477,287 valid ratings for 15,478 foods in our database.” Whether you agree or not, one thing is clear: food rankings, much like food itself, are deeply personal and always up for debate.
