Moussaka: Iconic Greek eggplant recipe

And, one such amazing delight happens to Moussaka, a classic version of a Greek dish, is generally made with layers of eggplant, potatoes and other ingredients topped with loads of cheese. It is indeed one of the most popular Greek dishes savoured by people. Serves 4
  • eggplant 2 Numbers
  • mutton 350 grams
  • potato 3 Numbers
  • chilli flakes 1 teaspoon
  • oregano flakes 1 teaspoon
  • tomato puree 1/2 cup
  • basil leaves 2 tablespoon
  • butter 1 tablespoon
  • refined flour 1 tablespoon
  • milk 1 1/2 cup
  • salt As required
  • black pepper 1/2 teaspoon


Step 1

Heat some oil in a pan. Sauté the onions and garlic till translucent. Add mince mutton and some salt. Mix it well.

Put spices in it including the spice powders, oregano and chilli flakes. Cook for a couple of minutes.

Add tomato puree and water and cook for another five minutes on low heat. You can adjust the seasoning and finish with some shredded basil. Remove it and keep it aside.

Cut brinjal and potatoes into thick slices and pan-fry them in oil until they turn golden on both sides and appear crispy. Keep them aside.

Time to assemble ingredients for Moussaka. Pick a casserole, and spread some white sauce (you prepared) on the bottom. The next layer would include slices of crispy shallow fried brinjal and potatoes.

Add the meat sauce (preparation) on top of the slices and cover it up with the remaining white sauce and lots of cheese.

Bake it at 180c for 15-18 mins and serve. You can garnish it with chilli flakes and basil leaves.
